Too Much Stuff? Store It At My Place!!!

Cleaner, Drier, And More Secure.

DampRid And Similar Products Are Excellent Products And Work Extremely Well To Absorb Moisture And Dampness But They Should NOT Be Used Inside Storage Lockup Rooms. Why Not?

We understand the thinking that if you are going to put your stuff into storage the likelihood of it getting damp is high on the basis that most storage places use either shipping containers or steel sheds – both have poor or restricted ventilation that do not breath very well. At our place, there can never be dampness in our storage lockup rooms from condensation unless you the customer stores something damp. At our place, our storage lockup rooms are built the same way as a modern house using fire-resistant wall and or ceiling linings or tough smooth structural plywood.

Therefore, if you introduce products to trap or attract dampness and moisture, because they are so effective, they will suck damp air from the outside to the inside. One of our customers did this without telling us and it dripped water from the product onto their stuff below and causing minor damage. They could see that the product they installed caused the problem and damage so had to take it on the chin.

Since 2006 when this self-storage facility first went into business to today (now almost 20 years on) not once has there been a case where dampness from condensation has been alleged. Products like DampRid are more suited to poorly ventilated or constructed places like wardrobes in older houses, shipping containers, steel self-storage sheds, and bathrooms in older houses.

One more piece of advice; if you do decide to use one of these moisture absorbing products they will need to be checked regularly – read the manufacturer’s instructions. That is because the product will reach a point where they cannot take in any more moisture and once that happens, they will start to drip water on what is below it. You cannot just install it and forget it – they need to be managed.

How often should they be checked (and then replaced)? That will be determined by the location or environment in which they are installed and the time of year – winter being the worst time. There is of course one way to avoid the problem in the first place – select a storage facility that guarantees you stuff will not get damp from condensation.
