Too Much Stuff? Store It At My Place!!!

Insurance Companies Hate This.

Most Insurance companies are reluctant to insure stuff in storage longer than 12 months (it is not that they won’t but they are reluctant). One of the main reasons for this is stuff can deteriorate if the storage facility is not fit for purpose, does not have adequate ventilation, or not enough care is taken when preparing stuff for storage.

We at Masterton Self-Storage are regularly asked by our customers if we insure their stuff while it is in storage. The answer is No because we never know what our customers are storing. What we can say is, most if not all the major insurance companies have inspected our facility and love it because of the monitored security alarm systems, the 18 CCTV cameras that operate 24/7, the storage lockup rooms are built the same way a modern home (no dampness from condensation – guaranteed), and because it is a fulltime business staff are on site every weekday.

Most of our customers have private contents insurance so our advice is always to write (creating a record) to your insurance company rep or insurance broker (email is fine) and ask them to tage and record on your policy that your stuff is in storage. To date (since 2006), to the best of our knowledge, not once has an insurance company not transferred one of our customer’s Contents Policy for their stuff while it is in storage at our place.

It is not that insurance companies will not insure stuff for longer than 12 months but they need to be convinced certain criteria has been applied or is in place. However, there is one thing neither your insurers nor Masterton Self-Storage have any control over – that is, how your stuff is prepared for storage and packed in the storage lockup room.Preparing stuff for storage means wrapping and packing in fitfor-purpose removal boxes (labelling as you go), using plastic storage boxes, wrapping and covering furniture, and tagging fragile items with stickers (we provide these free to our customers). Careful packaging, stacking, and covering will almost certainly help keep your stuff in the same condition as it was when it went into storage.

Imagine not doing the dusting at home for more than 3 months or longer. This may seem like common sense, but it is often overlooked.
These tips should help you get the best results when storing your stuff. Remember, the more effort that goes into packing, stacking, and covering the better the experience.
Why do people put stuff into storage? Because they have invested some their hardearned money in purchasing it in the first place so want to store it for a period of time while other matters in their life are being attended. In short, if your stuff is valuable enough to put into storage and pay storage fees for, then it is important to put the effort in preparation.
